Two emails in a row. Wow, these are interesting times for sure.
Today after sending my last email out I was invited by a a few of my students to share my weekly Hatha Yoga Class Online. I listened, and it feels very right, and very exciting to come together on Wednesdays in a larger global community to share a beautiful spirit based practice.
These classes are all levels- and are fine for every body. That being said, it’s a soothing class, not a restorative class. We challenge ourselves, by settling and sinking into our physical being, and allowing ourselves to melt and be with what arises. I offer many adjustments, and even if you just lie on your back the entire time, that is perfect. For me these classes are a opportunity to be a channel for what wants to come through for the group, and so there is always a beautiful weaving of spirit dancing through each moment and each word. There is a powerful magic that happens when we come together in community, in practice and in deep surrender, and I am so excited and honoured to share with you all. And what better medicine is there than deep breathing?
Yoga With Asrael
Flow with your breath. Connect with your spirit. Move into your being. These classes are great for all levels of yogi, offering a challenge to those more experienced, yet very accessible to the beginner. Flowing at times, we learn to be with our breath, our body, and our thoughts as we melt into the asanas. Experiencing the moment, opening the heart and the mind, and accepting the energy of being where we are, at the same time creating strength, stamina, and flexibility. Always infused with spirit and bliss, and lots of smiles:) Yoga poses, pranayama, and relaxation are all experienced in these classes.

Supplies– A yoga mat, a blanket are helpful, and then if you like blocks, or a strap, or an eye pillow are all nice additions but not necessary.
A big question I know, and one that probably doesn’t have an easy answer. What a crazy, interesting and unprecedented time this is. A time that really has no clear answers and no clear direction of what may come over the next few weeks, in fact the only clarity that seems to be present is that we must take the time to slow down, settle in and and be with ourselves. Not an easy task for many, especially with so much uncertainty, yet a beautiful opportunity to give space to all that is arising. As we allow things to bubble (or perhaps flood is a better word), to the surface we are given the gifts to be embraced by the energy and emotions present, as well as to acknowledge them with understanding and grace. Feeling it all, yet not moving from those feelings, and perhaps most of all opening to a greater trust in all that is, even if we don’t know what that will be.
If things intensify over the next few weeks, as I sense they will, I invite you to take time to tune into your self. To honour what comes up, and yet to not move from any source of fear or uncertainty. Take time to breathe. To be connected with your loved ones. To go outside and feel the earth underneath your feet. To meditate. To Smile. To Allow. And know you are not alone. Know you are held. Know that you are part of a larger global community, and we are all being invited to slow down and step into a greater place of acceptance, of trust and of love.
In the spirit of community, and to create space for us to come together as one, I am creating a circle to meet on Tuesday afternoons, starting March 24th. More info is below.
I was blessed to be in Hawaii over the past few weeks, such a gentle place to witness the tidal wave of energy quickly sweeping through us all. One of the things that was very clear to me when I was there, was the ever present power and “rightness” of nature. The birds were singing, the flowers were blooming, and life was living itself through the animals, and natural intelligence of nature. It is an important reminder to myself, and I feel for us all. That nature heals. That nature is in balance. That nature is medicine. And most importantly we are part of nature. So over the next few weeks I invite you to take time in nature if you can. Even if it’s just sitting in your backyard and taking a few breaths of fresh air, perhaps a simple and slow walk in the forest, or looking at the moon out your window. If it’s warm enough you could even step outside in your bare feet- total grounding, total connection. This gives us the opportunity to tune into something much bigger then ourselves, and helps to not just soothe our spirits and bodies, but to remind us that all is well, that all is divine.
One of the ways that I am reminded of the magic and healing energy of nature is through my experiences swimming with the wild spinner dolphins in Hawaii. I was blessed to have 5 mornings with them over the last few weeks. They are so amazing as they reflect the pure love and strength of the connection to the underlying field, and the powerful strength of the tribe as they dance in openhearted joy and play.
My husband took this video on our first day in the water- about 4 days before things started to really change. There were about 75-100 dolphins that day reminding me that there is nothing, like being embraced by the power of pure nature and pure LOVE.
Tuesday is the beginning of Navratri- The 9 days of Mother Divine begins this Tuesday evening, a beautiful time to come together and create space for whatever wants to be held.

It truly is an unprecedented time. A time that is not comfortable, a time that does not feel certain or safe, yet one that opens the door to us for to surrender into each and every moment.
Perhaps even more importantly it opens the door to for acceptance. Acceptance of the unknown, Acceptance of our feelings, Acceptance that all that we thought was safe, secure and necessary may not be so, and acceptance that all we can do right now is trust and go with the flow.
It’s a beautiful practice to be with. And one that is not comfortable.
And so I turn to gratitude. I am grateful to be given the opportunity to learn greater trust. I am grateful to be able to experience so many different feelings. I am grateful to be in connection with nature. I am grateful to be aligned with the larger global community of you all- and all my friends/clients around the world. I am grateful to be able to be here now, experiencing such powerful times.
And I remember- The earth is singing- the dolphins are swimming, the air is breathing brightly as it has a break from industry, from airplanes, cars etc.. That all is more than well.
A recalibration is happening. A door is opening and a new path is being laid. I really believe this. I am so curious to see where it will lead.

Happy New Year! I hope you are all well. I am. I always mean to take more time to check in with you all, and am so grateful when life allows me to do so.
After a very full year, it was lovely to have a two week break to step into a place of deep stillness and rest. This time off brought a lot of insight regarding the importance of settling the nervous system, slowing down and taking time to just be.
Permission To Be
Things are moving at a tremendously fast and vibrant pace, life is constantly growing and evolving, both on the multidimensional level, and in the physical world. As humans, we are faced with so much unconscious pressure on our energy systems as we continue to expand, and work in the physical world, all while absorbing the effects of waves of energy worldwide. We seem to unconsciously get caught up in the doing, the working, or just the general excess energy of moving from moment to moment. Even if this energy is just showing up as thoughts, getting the list done or having the belief that we need to keep our creative output at a certain level.
What if, in slowing down, in giving permission to just be who we are in that moment, we could open to a space of deep nourishment? What if this permission would give room for inspiration to flow when the energy and time is right?
For those of us in the northern hemisphere we are in deep winter. Nature’s natural intelligence is inviting us to slow down and to honour it’s rhythms. The darkness wants to embrace us in a big bear hug. What would it be like to accept that support and to sink into a space of deeper surrender? It’s hard. I know. Taking time for ourselves is often the first thing that we sacrifice to be of greater service to others, or perhaps even our purpose. Yet there is a magical and simple thing that happens when we give ourselves permission to enjoy. Permission to leave some days on the schedule free. Permission to do the things that we most desire to do (Even if it’s doing nothing, or watching a movie, or eating a decadent sweet meal).
When we open to this idea of trusting in what we need in the moment, instead of the list of things that needs to get done, the universe responds with a wave of nourishment that soothes the excess stress we unconsciously carry around. Now this might not happen the first time. It takes time for the nervous system to decompress, to “offgas” our learned habits and patterns. This may come in a wave of emotional release, or the mind speaking up loudly with all the things we need to do, but with practice it’s amazing to see what will open up.
After 2 weeks of sleeping in, having no agenda for the day, and doing what my being wanted (even if it was nothing), I started to notice creative inspiration flowing. It’s as if someone vacuumed out all the areas that were pushing towards that creative output and service. In the clear bright space left behind it allowed everything to unfold effortlessly, with the energy to bring it into fruition.
There is a time and a place for movement, and for action, even in the winter season, but that action doesn’t need to flow from the subconscious pressure on the energy system. Action can instead be supported by a free flow of prana in a nourished and well centred being. In doing less, in having space, we can actually accomplish more. It might not always be in the “timing” we would like, but there is an effortlessness and a grace to it, that is our birthright. As the life that is here to move through us has permission to do so, it’s amazing what will open up.
I invite you to create some time for yourself, maybe an afternoon a week, or a whole day where you don’t schedule anything (not even a walk outside), and see what unfolds as you allow yourself to be curious about trusting, and handing yourself over to the natural support of nature.
Who doesn’t love a good winter recipe. It’s the perfect time for soups and stews, and even some warmer, spicier meals. I have been exploring and experimenting with some different recipes, and this is one of my favourite. Yes, it uses onions and garlic, which is often something we avoid in Ayurveda, but at this cold time of year- can be so nourishing and bring us the warmth we need to ground and settle in. I use lots of fresh organic ginger, and paprika ground from peppers we grew in our garden last year. So yummy@
3 tablespoons olive oil or ghee
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
½ teaspoon black mustard seeds.
1 onion, diced
½ – 1 Serrano pepper or green chili, minced
2 teaspoons minced garlic
2 teaspoons minced ginger
2 medium potatoes or sweet potatoes (approx. 1 pound), cut into 1-inch pieces
¼ cup water
1 cauliflower, cut into florets
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon turmeric
½ teaspoon garam masala
¼ teaspoon cayenne, adjust to taste
Melt 2 tablespoons oil/ghee in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds.
Once the seeds begin to splutter, add onions and stir frequently for for 5 minutes, or until they begin to brown.
Add the potatoes and the remaining tablespoon of oil/ghee and continue to stir frequently for about 5 minutes.
Add garlic, ginger, Serrano pepper and spices. Stir for a minute, then add the cauliflower.
Mix well, add ¼ cup water then cover the pot with a lid. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 10 minutes, stir, then cook for another 10 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.
Garnish with cilantro, serve.

I love summertime. There is something about the longer days, and bright sky that just nourishes my soul and being. Somehow it’s easier for me to slow down, take rest and enjoy. It’s like nature resets my nervous system and reminds me its ok to play and get out in nature, which I do often, taking time enjoying the local rivers, and forests.
How do you nourish yourself at this time of year?
Full Moon Blessings
I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Full Moon, and to encourage you to take time to slow down and really enjoy whatever your truth may be today. We have been in between 2 eclipses, a solar eclipse on July 2 and a lunar eclipse today. This is always an interesting time, as the eclipses can bring to light what has been hidden and wanting to come into the light. In our culture we are so used to a quest for happiness, and peace that we don’t always connect with the essential energy of love that is always present. We also don’t take time to fully receive the wisdom that is constantly being shared to us from the natural intelligence of our bodies and beings. I invite you to take some time today to tune in and reflect on how you are feeling, and what you might be experiencing in the multi dimensional level of your senses. Give yourself permission to connect with what may be there and ask for a message or a symbol of its purpose. If we listen and pay attention, we are often gifted with a key to exactly what we may need to support us on our path to remembering our natural state of wholeness. Celebrate who and what you are, and celebrate the fullness of the light of this moon, as a reflection of the light of yourself.
It is also the Full Moon of Guru Purnima, a day for honouring our teachers (celebrated yesterday in India), I want to take time to honour my mentor, and dear friend Dr. Paul Dugliss, for all he has brought to the world and to my life. I also want to honour all of my Yoga Teachers, Chi Kung Teachers, my clients and all the beings in my community who offer me so much wisdom in their teachings, connections and reflections. Recipe- Mint Cilantro Rice
Today I was inspired to share a favourite recipe from one of my favourite cookbook authors, Aparna Khanolkar’s Happy Belly Cookbook. It’s a perfect mix for summer: sweet basmati rice, summer vegetables, and fresh herbs to support digestion. I didn’t have green beans so substituted zucchini, and added in a sweet red pepper as well.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Mint- Cilantro Rice With Cashews And Vegetables
1 cup basmati rice
2 cups water
3/4 tsp salt
3 Tbs oil or ghee
1 cardamom pod
1 bay leaf
1 cinnamon stick
1 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 clove garlic finely chopped
1/2 small onion
1/2 inch piece of ginger grated
10 whole cashews
15 green beans trimmed and cut into 1 inch pieces
1/2 small head of cauliflower
1 medium carrot sliced thinly
1/2 tsp salt
In a blender mix and blend to a fine paste
1 bunch cilantro
15 mint leaves
1/2 tsp pepper.
Wash and rinse the rice well. Mix with water and salt in saucepan, bring to a boil and cover. Let cook on low for 15 minutes, then leave covered without opening for 5. In a large skillet heat the oil on medium and add the whole spices. Saute for 45 seconds or until the cumin starts to brown and smell toasted (do not overcook). Add the onion, garlic, ginger and turmeric and cook for about 6 minutes, until the onions are translucent. Then add the cashews and continue to cook for 2 minutes. Turn the heat up to high, add the veggies and cook about 4 minutes, stirring. Add the mint/cilantro mix and continue to cook and stir until the water is dissolved. Mix with the rice and enjoy.

Happy Early Summer. Life is amazing isn’t it? Every moment bringing us something new to experience and to enjoy. This spring has been a spring of great transition, transformation and growth. It feels as if everything that was ready to move has been swept away on the channels of change, and that the next layer of “being” has fully integrated and arrived. It feels good. I am grounded, awake, grateful, aligned and connected with my heart centre. It feels at least for the moment, that it is a space to just relax, allow and to receive the gifts of the spirit and the universe.

Dhanyavad (For The Joy Of Gratitude)
In the spirit of an open heart I felt inspired to share with you a beautiful and gentle mantra that every time I listen, my heart opens. It’s simple, beautiful and divine. The definition of dhanyavad is gratitude and ananda is the joy and bliss of the highest state of consciousness, the essence of who we are.
I also felt inspired to share one of my favourite summer time breathing practices. It is a simple and powerful way to shift not only our body temperature, but bring balance to our emotions and energy bodies.
This breath was “discovered” by the ancient Indian Sages as they observed the elements of nature, (the curling of a leaf in the sweet dew, the gentle in-breath of a cobra), and imitated it, unlocking the power of this technique. Sitali breath can be done anytime, not just in yoga or before meditation, and is especially good on those days that we are feeling overwhelmed, overheated and sticky with sweat.
Sitali Pranayama cools the body, invites moisture into the being and soothes any excess heat or inflammation in the body. It also brings relaxation, nourishes the nervous system, and reduces excess fatigue.
Sit comfortably in a chair, or cross legged. It’s extra nourishing if you can be outside in nature in a shady space. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and settle in.
Curl your tongue lengthwise and allow it to stick out of your mouth a little (¾ inch). If your tongue doesn’t curl, just allow the tip of it to rest gently at the top of the mouth behind the teeth.
Inhale deeply, yet slowly across your tongue and into your mouth, as if you were sipping through a straw.
Exhale through the nostrils, as you close your mouth.
Continue for up to 5 minutes on a hot summer day then allow yourself to let go and rest- Notice the difference in your body temperature and in your mind. You might notice that you feel much cooler, and also that there is a spacious ness and a sweetness to your emotions and thoughts. This pranayama practice is wonderful to do in the heat of summer, creating balance in body, mind and spirit.

It’s not something we do very often, experience pure awakened celebration. At least I don’t. I am great with daily practice of gratitudes, meditation, and heart centred sadhana, but there is something different about the feeling of pure unadulterated celebration, basking in the beauty of what is around us, and experiencing the essence of that beauty and energy. Today I celebrate the sunshine on my face, the freshness of the air (it smells like an early spring here on Vancouver Island, and the sweetness, and strength of my body. It feels good to just relish these things, to feel them bright and open in the moment. Today I celebrate. It feels good.
I also wanted to share a little bit about transition. I don’t know about you, but my life has been full of transition these past few months. In fact there is so much that is moving, or being put into place to move, yet things have also been at a standstill, with no apparent growth at all. It has been an interesting space to be, knowing that big changes are happening and feeling them on both an internal and external level, yet being in a space of surrender to the timing of the universe, waiting for it to offer the first wave of exalted movement.
As I sit with this, I sense that part of this holding period that many of us are in is the beginning of great change. As we have been marinating in the space of stillness, the layers have been shed and the new beginnings are calling us forth. Yet it has been winter, and in alignment with the elemental energy, it really hasn’t been time to move, to take big steps. Like seeds we are being held in a space of suspension until the light calls us forth. We have been feeling the need for jumping in, for flowing in the waves of change we sense on such a big level, yet the internal work has been so important and we have needed this stillness to fully occur.
A reminder to myself that instead of me moving outwardly, or waiting for the right time and place to arrive on my timeline, that the gift of this “stalled” transition has been exactly as it needs to be. And as the wheel turns, as spring comes, the sunshine and rain can nourish and water us, propelling us forward ready and excited to make the steps into what is to come. A reminder of surrender, allowing, deep rest and overall immense trust in the life we are here to live.
Recipe- My Favourite Dal
This is one of my favourite recipes. It’s light, yet nourishing and incredibly tasty. I never get tired of the mix of coconut and lime. As we start to head into Kapha session the lentils bring a lightness, the pepper a spiciness to bring balance, yet there is still a feeling of grounded sweetness in this beautiful and sacred simple dish.
1 cup red lentils
3.5 cup water
2 Tbs Ghee (or olive oil)
1 tsp mustard seeds
A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
1 tsp grated or chopped ginger
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 Roma tomato finely chopped
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 Tbs dry unsweetened shredded coconut
Juice of 1 lime
4 Tbs cilantro
Wash the lentils in 3 changes of water. Place the lentils and water in a medium sized pot and bring to a boil. Skim the froth as it rises to the surface and discard. Cook on medium heat til the lentils are soft and fully cooked, about 15 minutes. While the lentils are cooking in a small pan, heat the oil and add the mustard seeds and allow them to pop. Next add the cumin seeds and ginger and sauce about 45 seconds. Add the hing and turmeric and saute for 10 seconds. Add this to the cooked dal along with salt and pepper. Bring the dal to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Add cilantro, coconut and lime juice and serve hot.

We are so enjoying our monthly Moon Circles. WE have been so blessed to have such wonderful women join us from all over the continent. These circles are monthly gatherings of community, ritual and awakening. We host them on a site that has a forum that we use as an altar for intention setting and sharing, as well as a place of connecting with our community. We meet every month close to or on the New Moon.
